Today, the renowned French fashion house, Chloé, has officially announced the appointment of the German designer, Chemena Kamali, as its Creative Director. Fans and followers of the brand can anticipate Kamali’s debut with her first pre-collection, which is set to be showcased in Paris come January 2024. This announcement follows the exit of Gabriela Hearst from the Maison.
The fashion industry had been buzzing with speculations for some time about Kamali taking the helm at Chloé. Her association with the brand traces back to her early career days when she was a part of Phoebe Philo’s team. Later, in 2013, she took on the role of Design Director under Clare Waight Keller. Kamali’s expertise also extends to her tenure as the Design Director for Anthony Vaccarello at the iconic brand, Saint Laurent, starting in 2016.
Expressing her emotions on rejoining Chloé, Kamali stated, “My heart has always been with Chloé. Ever since I first stepped into its realm over two decades ago.” She further elaborated on her return, describing it as both “natural” and “deeply personal.” Kamali expressed her immense honor in taking up this pivotal role and emphasized her intent to build upon the foundational vision set by Gaby Aghion and Karl Lagerfeld during the early days of the Maison. She aspires to encapsulate and convey the emotional essence and spirit of Chloé to the contemporary audience.
Riccardo Bellini, the President and CEO of the Maison, resonated with Kamali’s feelings about her return to Chloé. He highlighted Kamali’s vision, deeply rooted in her affection for the brand, and expressed confidence that it would genuinely epitomize Chloé’s distinct DNA. Bellini remarked, “Chemena is not only the Creative Director of Chloé but also personifies the Chloé spirit. I eagerly await the realization of her vision.”
Kamali’s appointment is particularly significant in the current fashion landscape, where discussions about the underrepresentation of women in influential roles, both on the creative and business fronts, are prevalent. Given Kamali’s profound background and her longstanding association with the Maison, the fashion community is keenly looking forward to her inaugural showcase in January.
